On Oct. 6, 2018 Morro Bay Maritime Museum inaugurated its new, official weather station with the launching of a weather balloon. PG & E meteorologist, John Lindsey, was on hand to do the deed. First, the balloon was filled with helium and the SLO County Regional Airport was notified that the launch would occur at noon. The balloon ascended rapidly for the first 20,000 feet then headed south. The balloon eventually rose to 110,000 feet where, in subfreezing temperatures it disintegrated having enlarged to 40 feet in diameter. All are welcome to come by the museum on Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to see what the wind speed, temperature, and humidity are on the waterfront.
